Microchipping is the only permanent, fail-safe way to ensure your cat is returned if lost or stolen. The procedure is quick, safe, and takes seconds. A tiny chip (the size of a grain of rice) is injected under the skin between the shoulder blades.

Things To Know About Microchipping

  • Timing: The chip can be inserted at any age by any local veterinary clinic; this can be done at the same time as a neutering or spaying procedure and is often included as part of a cat adoption package

  • Database Registration: The microchip itself only holds a unique 15-digit ID number. Do not forget to register this number on a national pet database and keep your address and phone number updated

  • Safety for Indoor Cats: Even purely indoor cats should be chipped; if they accidentally dart out a door or escape during a move, a chip may be their only ticket home

  • Futureproofing: Chips last over 25 years. Ask your vet to scan and check the chip during your cat's annual check-up to ensure it hasn't moved or stopped reading
